有的人认为我疯了，有道理。我的名字叫保罗•萨洛佩科，我受过专业的生物学训练，我曾是一名经验丰富的驻外记者，现在是《国家地理》的撰稿人和探险家。我不断地在行走，从非洲出发，徒步走向南美洲的最南端——火地岛。我的项目叫“永远的行走”，是一个有关“慢下来”的旅程，花时间去倾听、去学习，全情投入地去和人们交流。

Some people think I'm crazy. Fair enough. My name is Paul Salopek. I’m a biologist by training, a foreign correspondent through long experience, and a National Geographic writer and explorer. I am walking continuously without breaks from Africa, all the way to the tip of South America, the place called Tierra Del Fuego. My project, called “The Forever Walk”, is a journey about slowing down, taking the time to listen, to learn, and to interact with humanity in the most immersive way possible.

我的目的是与人相遇。无论我遇见谁，这些沿途人们的日常生活让我窥见我们这个时代的重要议题。他们的故事构成一个意义丰富的镶嵌艺术品，连接着我们所有人。

People are my destination. Regardless of who I encounter, it’s the daily lives of the individuals along my trail who offer windows into the big issues of our time. Their stories form a mosaic of meaning that can connect us all.

我6岁的时候就移民去了墨西哥，为了在学校不受欺负，我学会了讲故事，能言善辩可以避免挨打。那可以说是我的超能力，或许也是我写作生涯的启蒙，让我感知到讲故事的力量。

When my family emigrated to Mexico, I was six years old. To avoid getting beat up at school, I acquired a quick tongue, fending off blows with storytelling. It was my superpower so to speak, and maybe, it launched me into a writing career, teaching me the power of narrative.

自从踏入中国，我沿着胡焕庸线行走。它是一条穿越中国东部和西部的假想分界线。它引导我跨越了10个省市，行程6000多公里。

Since setting foot in the Middle Kingdom, I’ve been following the Hu Line. It’s an imaginary boundary that divides east and west China. More than two years later, it has steered me some 7,000 kilometers across ten provinces.

当这段漫长的旅程临近结束时，却出现了意想不到的转折。

But as the end of this long traverse nears, the trail takes an unexpected turn.

保罗：当初的想法是大致沿着胡焕庸线穿越中国，从云南到黑龙江。因为世界上的一些事情，我们决定掉头。我们原本是向北走的，现在几乎180度调头，向南走向大连，但我觉得也是一件好事。走向大连，将是时隔11年，我再次见到海洋。如果这一幕成为我在中国徒步行走的终点，将会极其美妙。

PAUL: It was a very difficult decision, the idea was to walk all the way through China, more or less along the Hu Line, which goes from Yunan to Heilongjiang, because of world events. We decided one day we had to turn around, we headed north and we had to kind of do almost one eighty to go back south towards Dalian. But the good thing is I go with a big heart. Walking to Dalian, it'll be the first time I see the ocean in 11 years, and to be able to kind of walk to the sea as kind of my exit portal from China is a pretty wonderful thing.

LUO XIN: I was aware that he was arranging a gathering with his walking partners before departing from China. He anticipates a farewell event, possibly with a ceremony of some sort. I think I have to make time for it, so I put off a lot of things.

PAUL: Yeah, we’re going to get off the big roads so it’s going to be a 37 kilometers day. Alright, so let’s do it.

While the nature of foot travel is unpredictable, the power of this community has been constant. They are my brothers and sisters. It’s through their eyes I’ve seen China, and their voices have been key to my storytelling.

LI HUIPU: In Chinese medicine.

PAUL: It’s bad?

LI HUIPU: Yea, it’s bad. Wet hair, and you cover it, that will give you a headache.

BECKY LIN: She’s planting the corn.

PAUL: Tell her I wish her a good harvest this year.

保罗：真的，与那些徒步伙伴相遇，让我增长了很多见识，他们教会了我很多。与他们同行，数日数周甚至数月地交谈，他们毫无保留与我分享一切。他们每个人都是一个世界，我会带着他们的故事离开中国。

PAUL: Oh my God, how much of my life has been expanded by knowing my friends here and how much they have taught me. You walk with somebody, you talk with them for days, sometimes weeks, sometimes months. What my walking partners share is a universe. Every one of them is a universe and it's their lives that I think I'll be carrying away from China.

The Tea Horse Trail along the western frontiers of China is one of the longest and most dramatic trade routes of the ancient world. We had come to the former trading hub of Ya’an to learn about the lives of the tea pickers, but we found something else brewing.

他的名字叫余成章，他过着闲云野鹤般的生活。70多岁的余成章住在山上的寺庙里，那也是他写诗的地方。

His name was Yu Chengzhang and he was larger than life. A gentleman in his seventies who lived in a temple on a hill where he wrote poetry.

BECKY LIN: He said there’s a ton.

PAUL：So, I said, “How many poems have you written”? He said: “I have 250 kilograms”. He was talking about the papers weighed 250 kilograms of poems. He measured his poetry in kilograms.

PAUL: Number one! I am surprise you know, you don't have like a stream of young students for Ya'an coming up to the temple. This is like a movie. Right. The old kung fu master living in the temple and coming up here to spend a few days the train。

YU CHENGZHANG: I live in this temple. I am respected in the martial arts circle in Ya'an. I am respected in the martial arts circle in Ya'an.

保罗：我遇到这样一位老人，他像隐士一样地生活。离开家人，每天习武，每天也在不停写诗。我发现了这样的人，对我来说这些都是关于中国的最好的故事。故事里不寻常的人，他们拥有自己的使命，自己的愿景，自己的人生哲学。他们不就是老师吗？他们给我上了一课。如果我能讲好他们的故事，那我的读者也会深受启发。

PAUL: It’s too almost superhuman that there be some old guy whose kind of living a bit like a hermit, away from his family and he was doing martial arts every single day, and also writing poems every single day. I found people like that, and those are the best stories about China, to me, that kind of capture these remarkable individuals who have their own mission, their own vision, their own philosophy because they're like teachers, right? They're teachers to me and if I can do my job right, they could be teachers to my readers as well.

就如同一个好故事，曲折变化也贯穿在整个徒步行走中，我的徒步伙伴们见证了这一点。他们陪我从郁郁葱葱的云南走到如今天寒地冻的大连。旅程即将结束，让我印象最深刻的始终是我遇到的人和看到的风景。

Like any good story, the walk has been filled with twists and turns, something my walking partners can attest to, having accompanied me from tropical Yunnan to now, Dalian, in the frosty northeast, where the journey will soon culminate. But what’s made a lasting impression on me are the people and the landscapes.

Nomadic beekeeping is an ancient practice. The family travels with hundreds of beehives cross-country in search of flowers in bloom.

LIU LIFENG: Where is the farthest you’ve been to?

XIE DONGLIAN: We’ve been to Yunnan as well as Dongbei.

PROFESSOR LUOXIN: How long do you typically stay in one location?

XIE DONGLIAN: Ten or twenty days when the flowers are in bloom.

PROFESSOR LUOXIN: Not even a month?

XIE DONGLIAN: No.

保罗：触动我的是，中国的农民掌握了很多与自然相处的知识。我想在这些“人类图书馆”还在时，以某种方式将这些知识记录下来。中国农民在可持续发展方面的经验对全世界都非常宝贵。

PAUL: What struck me is how much knowledge Chinese farmers have about how to interact with the earth that I hope is somehow recorded for the future before these human libraries disappear. Chinese farmers have lessons about sustainability that I think would be very valuable for the entire world.

全世界三分之一的粮食供给都依赖蜜蜂授粉，但蜜蜂数量正在减少，因为疾病，因为杀虫剂的使用，因为栖息地被破坏，也因为气候变化。顺应大自然的规律不仅对蜜蜂的生存有利，对人类的生存也至关重要。

A third of the world’s food production depends on bees. But with bee populations on a decline due to disease, pesticides, habitat loss and climate change, being attuned to nature’s cues is vital for the survival not just of the bees, but for humankind.

刘立峰：最困难的是什么？

谢东莲丈夫：最困难的，总体说起来就是不流蜜最困难。

谢东莲：那个山上的花不流蜜，那个最困难。

刘立峰：为什么花不流蜜呢？

谢东莲：花有时候，因为天气，气温高低，天气干旱的那会儿，有的时间短，（花）就不流蜜。还有正好那个开花了，刮大风 ，一刮风......

罗新：花粉都毁了吗？

谢东莲：把那个花的蜜都吹掉了。

LIU LIFENG: What is the most difficult aspect?

XIE’S HUSBAND: The biggest challenge. The biggest challenge is if there is no nectar.

XIE DONGLIAN: If the flowers in the mountains don’t produce any nectar, that’s the most difficult thing.

LIU LIFENG: Why would a flower not produce nectar?

XIE DONGLIAN: Flowers have timings and then there is the weather, climate and humidity. If the bloom time is short, the flowers may not have nectar. Or if a sudden gust of wind comes when the flowers are in bloom…

LUO XING: And destroys the pollen?

XIE DONGLIAN: The nectar can get blown away.

PAUL: The Forever Walk is a storytelling project whose mission is to remind readers around the world that you are part of a larger chain of stories. You can see that the challenges of the people in China are not much different than your own challenges. The joys of the people of China are not much different from your joys and that in today's world, more than ever, more than any time in the 300,000 years of our species, their story is important because it's a global world.

杨文斗：我觉得有一点遗憾，老父亲身体也不太舒服就住院了，然后两个孩子还要上学、接送，非常不容易。我问我自己，你到底要不要来？我下了一个决定，我还是想来的。我的家人是完全支持的，他们也觉得保罗做这个事情非常了不起。这一点我一直对我的家人心怀感激。

YANG WENDOU: I felt a bit regretful because my father has been hospitalized and my two kids go to school, so they need to be picked up and dropped off. It hasn’t been easy. I asked myself if I really wanted to go. I made up my mind and came anyway. My family are fully supportive. They also think Paul is doing is something extraordinary and I’m extremely grateful to them.

Almost everything I have learned about China I’ve learned on foot. It’s akin to a walking university.

保罗：人们会问我，当你在“里程碑”停下时你会遇到谁呢？每100英里或者160公里我都会停下来与第一个我遇到的人交谈，碰巧我的第91个“里程碑”在辽宁。我遇到了一位传统的中医，她在路旁一间小诊所里工作，这诊所大概只有2米长，2米宽。

PAUL: People say, who do you meet when you stop on these milestones, right? Every 100 miles or hundred sixty kilometers, I stop and I talk to the first person I meet. It just so happens that at this milestone No.91 here in Liaoning, it was a traditional, a Chinese medicine doctor who is working out of a small little hut, maybe 2 meters by 2 meters next to the road.

潘隽：其实当时我的内心里面是有一些忐忑的，我觉得大姐仿佛不是特别地欢迎我们，那我们是不是不应该再继续打扰她了。结果没想到保罗指着桌上的托着把脉的一个小垫子，他说：“我可不可以试试，你可不可以给我看一下”，然后她就让保罗把手放上来。所有的一切保罗就完全按照她说的做。

PAN JUN: I was feeling a bit uneasy at the time. She didn't appear very welcoming towards us. Perhaps we shouldn't trouble her any further. I was taken aback by what happened next. Paul pointed to a small cushion on the table where she was taking people’s pulse and asked “Can I try that? Will you show me?” She agreed, and Paul proceeded to do exactly as she had instructed.

医生：你伸下舌头。

DOCTOR: Please stick your tongue out.

保罗：她为我把了脉，中医有不同的诊断方式，她给我把了脉，沉默了很久，我感到有点奇怪，因为她沉默了差不多有一分钟，我在想我大概是出问题了。

PAUL: And so, she did it by pulse. There are different ways to test in traditional medicine, but she kind of felt my pulse and then the silence was dragging on. I was kind of wondering what's going on because like almost a minute she was silent. You know, I'm saying, oh, man, I'm in trouble.

医生：确实是，肝有点毛病，肝、肾。胃也不好，脾胃也不好，肝肾阴虚，肝血不足。

DOCTOR: It appears you have an issue. There appears to be a problem with his liver. Issues with the liver and kidneys, as well as stomach and spleen problems. The liver and kidneys are weak. Poor circulation in the liver.

保罗：我大概是要死了，我可能活不到明天了。

PAUL: In subthought, okay, I'm basically dying. What am I? I'll be around till tomorrow?

保罗：那我现在的治疗方案是什么？

医生：吃半个月，看看啥样。

耿堃：这啥呀？菊杞地黄丸，这是三味中药。

保罗：所以我要服用这些药多久？

耿堃：半个月。

保罗：半个月，两周吗？

PAUL: And what's the treatment?

DOCTOR: Give this a try for half a month and see how it goes.

FRANK: What's this? Chrysanthemum and Goji Berry Rehmannia Pill. These are three traditional Chinese medicines.

PAUL: And so how long do I take this?

FRANK: Half a month.

PAUL: Half a month, two weeks?

潘隽：我当时其实在旁边做拍摄的时候，我已经快笑翻了。但是同时我明显地感觉到整个屋子里的空气，那个气氛就一下子变得温暖，充满了温情。然后这个里面有医生的专业度，也有病人的那种认真、那种听话、那种渴求。所以我觉得那个时候那个大姐就跟十几分钟之前完全不一样了。

PAN JUN: I tried to stifle my laughter while filming on the sidelines, but the atmosphere in the room unexpectedly became warm. The room was filled with warmth. The atmosphere was saturated with the doctor's professionalism, Paul's seriousness, obedience and thirst for answers, causing me to perceive a significant change in the lady from just ten minutes prior.

潘隽：我们走出来了之后我的徒步伙伴就跟保罗说：“你用自己特殊的本领改变了她对你的认知。”保罗说：“我什么都没有做，我只是把她当作我在乡村的那个‘汤姆大叔’”，当作他的亲戚，当作他的乡邻，他说我仅仅就只做了这样的事情。所以那件事情让我的感触非常地深，我觉得很多东西是可以跨越语言、跨越肤色、跨越很多我们看起来不能跨越的障碍。所以在这件事情上面，我是深深地感觉、感受到了那句话的力量，“与人相遇才是我的目的”。

PAN JUN: After we got out of there. My walking partner told Paul that “You've altered her view of you in your own distinctive manner.” Paul said he didn't do anything. He simply saw her as “Uncle Tom from my town”, similar to a relative or neighbor. That's all he had done, he said. I was deeply moved by the encounter. There are numerous things that transcend language and skin color, overcoming barriers that are difficult to surmount. From that, I strongly connected with the statement he frequently makes: “People are (my) destination.”

保罗：我热爱这次穿越中国的徒步，因为我能够自由自在地穿行。没有人告诉我走这条路，走那条路。我每天早上醒来都可以自由选择去任何地方，跟随我的好奇心分享我对中国的发现。作为我徒步全球的其中一站，中国是21世纪如此重要的一个国家，任何如今的全球项目都不能少了中国。因此，我为能够走过中国深感荣幸。

PAUL: So, what I love about the walk through China is it has allowed me to be able to move through China unhindered. Nobody's telling me go this way, go that way. I get to wake up every morning and go wherever I want to go and follow my curiosity to share my discovery of China as part of this global journey, right? And China is such an important country in the 21st century that it is impossible to leave out of any project that's global. China has to be in there. And so, the great privilege and luck that I've had to be able to walk through this country is extraordinary.
