China contributes close to a third of the world' s GDP.

Its overall tariff rate has been slashed from 15.3% to 7.4%.

Exports were seven times what they were 20 years ago, and imports six times.

But how does all this factor into people’s daily lives here and overseas?

This is a fairly typical local wet market, and it’s not difficult to find something imported.

In 2020, China imported almost ten million tons of meat.

2020年 中国总计进口肉类近1000万吨

More than two million tons of that was beef.

其中 牛肉进口量超200万吨

A lot of that beef came from countries like Brazil, Argentina and Australia.

Now we're at the fruit section.

I did some research.

Twenty years ago, bananas were the most popular imported fruit in China.

20年前 香蕉是中国人最喜爱的进口水果

By 2018, cherries were topping the list.

2018年 樱桃是中国进口最多的水果

And in 2020, durian was the most popular imported fruit in the country.

到2020年 榴莲成为了中国进口水果之“王”

One this size costs about two hundred yuan or thirty US dollars.

这种大小的榴莲大约要200元 差不多是30美元

But it's a big one and it's really spiky.

不过它很大 还很扎手

On the other hand, apples and pears have always been China's top exported fruits.

另一方面 苹果和梨一直是中国出口最多的水果

And the export value is now fifteen times what it was twenty years ago.

如今 它们的出口额已经达到了20年前的15倍

Most of them go to North and South America.

大部分出口到北美洲和南美洲的市场

Fresh imported and exported fruits right here on the street corner.

Although public transportation is ridiculously convenient in big cities like Shanghai, having a car just makes it a little bit easier for longer distance commutes, or when I want to get out of town with friends or family, I did have to rush to get my driver's license though.
